Qualifying Steel Structure Manufacturing in VietnamA 700-Ton Safety-Critical Project for the US Market
Client Objective
European engineering company | US-bound project | ~3-week qualification process
A European engineering company was evaluating Vietnam as an alternative manufacturing base for a safety-critical steel structure project destined for the US market.
The scope included approximately 700 tons of steel structures, including large load-bearing structures, elevated platforms, walkways, staircases and maintenance-access structures for a complex installation.
With an established international manufacturing supply chain, the client was exploring Vietnam as a more cost-competitive manufacturing location while diversifying sourcing risk and maintaining strict control over steel origin and material traceability.
The project also had a highly restricted timeline. With delivery targeted for November, FVSource had approximately 1–2 weeks to identify qualified manufacturers and obtain initial quotation options.
The key question was:
Could Vietnam provide a technically credible and commercially viable manufacturing solution for a safety-critical project while meeting the required timeline and reducing dependence on China?
The solution needed to address:
Cost competitiveness | Technical & safety compliance | Material origin & traceability | Manufacturing feasibility | Production timeline
Our Approach
FVSource treated the assignment as a manufacturing feasibility and supplier qualification project, rather than a conventional factory search.
The assessment connected:
Factory Capability → Manufacturing Process → Material Origin → Cost → Lead Time
The assessment covered certifications, welding and quality controls, production capabilities, material traceability, capacity, and commercial suitability.
FVSource also investigated the manufacturing route itself. When some factories proposed welded tubular sections from rolled steel plates, alternative hot-rolled and LSAW pipe solutions were assessed, including standard vs. customized dimensions and local vs. imported materials.
This helped identify the technical, cost, material-origin, and lead-time implications of each option.
Key Results
~1.5 weeks
Initial manufacturing options and quotation options identified.
~3 weeks
Qualified shortlist established.
35 → 15 → 7 → 4 → 2
35 manufacturers screened
→ 15 potential candidates
→ 7 technically assessed
→ 4 shortlisted
→ 2 progressing toward production
EXC3-level qualification
Manufacturers assessed against EN 1090-2:2008, Execution Class EXC3, or an accepted ASTM/AWS equivalent.
4 factory audits completed
2 manufacturers progressing toward production, both accepting the required production volume and target unit price.
Business Impact
FVSource gave the client a project-specific assessment of Vietnam’s manufacturing feasibility for a technically demanding, safety-critical project.
Instead of selecting suppliers based on price alone, the client could compare technical capability, manufacturing process, material origin, cost, capacity, and lead time.
This provided a qualified basis to evaluate Vietnam as an alternative to China and identify potential constraints before procurement and production.
The outcome: two qualified manufacturing options progressing toward production, with the required volume and target price accepted.
